One of the biggest benefits about living in Mexico, especially for retirees, is the lower cost of living compared to other countries. Larger tourist cities like Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta do have their pricey restaurants and nightlife, but you can always find affordable (Sometimes downright cheap!) options. Prices on everyday items like groceries tend to be quite a bit less expensive than in other countries, and public transportation is generally very affordable. Utilities like gas, water and electricity are more expensive in Mexico, as is telephone service, especially long-distance. Big-ticket items such as electronics for your home cost more than identical items in other countries, so be prepared when furnishing your house! One expense to keep in mind is the price of potable water. You may want to invest in a water purifier or “garrafones”, 20L containers of water that you can have delivered to your home.
